²¹ By day the Lord went ahead^(A) of them in a pillar of cloud^(B) to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night.

²² Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left^(A) its place in front of the people.

¹⁹ Then the angel of God,^(A) who had been traveling in front of Israel’s army, withdrew and went behind them. The pillar of cloud^(B) also moved from in front and stood behind^(C) them,

²⁴ During the last watch of the night the Lord looked down from the pillar of fire and cloud^(A) at the Egyptian army and threw it into confusion.^(B)

¹⁰ While Aaron was speaking to the whole Israelite community, they looked toward the desert, and there was the glory^(A) of the Lord appearing in the cloud.^(B)

⁹ The Lord said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud,^(A) so that the people will hear me speaking^(B) with you and will always put their trust^(C) in you.” Then Moses told the Lord what the people had said.

¹⁶ On the morning of the third day there was thunder^(A) and lightning, with a thick cloud^(B) over the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast.^(C) Everyone in the camp trembled.^(D)

¹⁶ and the glory^(A) of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai.^(B) For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud.^{(C) 17} To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire^(D) on top of the mountain. ¹⁸ Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty^(E) days and forty nights.^(F)
